A Mothers Love in Action: Three Generations Serving Together
This Mother’s Day, we’re proud to highlight a beautiful story of family, service, and tradition through Lisa Murray and her incredible family.
Lisa’s journey of giving back began years ago, rooted in values she passed down to her son, Ian Martin. Ian started volunteering at just 10 years old, learning early on the importance of showing up for others. What began as a simple act of service would grow into something much deeper—a shared passion that continues to bring their family together.
Sixteen years ago, Lisa had the idea to form a cook team. With Ian’s support and growing experience in the kitchen, that idea quickly turned into a meaningful family tradition. Once a month, on Saturdays, Lisa and her family gather to prepare and serve meals for the community. What started as a mother and son effort has now grown into a multigenerational act of love.
Ian, now a trained chef with extensive experience, plays a key role in preparing meals. Though he has built a successful career as an IT specialist and manager, he continues to dedicate his time by cooking regularly at the site and has even served at all partner locations. His commitment reflects not only his skills, but his heart for service.
Adding to this special story is Lisa’s mother, Rita Hirsch. At 87 years old, Rita faithfully joins the team once a month, bringing her own joy and spirit to the experience. Fondly known by Lisa as the team’s “professional can opener,” Rita’s presence is a reminder that it’s never too late to make an impact.
Together, Lisa, Ian, and Rita represent three generations united by compassion and purpose. Their dedication goes beyond preparing meals—it’s about connection, community, and continuing a legacy of care.
Lisa shares that her family is a big part of why she loves what she does. They believe deeply in the mission of the Gathering and the meaningful work being done to serve others.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate not just Lisa as a mother, but as a leader who inspires her family—and all of us—to give, serve, and show up with love.
