Our History
Founded in 1982 as a weekday breakfast ministry in downtown Milwaukee, The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin has grown into one of the region’s largest volunteer-driven meal programs. Over four decades, it has expanded from a single site to multiple locations, serving more than 127,000 meals annually through strong congregational and community partnerships. Grounded in dignity-centered service and adaptability, The Gathering continues to respond to evolving hunger needs while remaining rooted in its original mission: ensuring all neighbors have access to nourishing food.
1982
Early beginnings
The organization’s community meal programs started in 1982, serving free hot breakfast Monday through Friday in downtown Milwaukee. This early site became a reliable place where people experiencing hunger and homelessness could receive a freshly prepared meal without any intake or barriers.
1990s
Evolution and Growth
Over time, the meal program expanded beyond the original breakfast site. By the 1990s and into the 2000s, The Gathering added multiple meal sites throughout Milwaukee, including dinner programs and Saturday lunch services. These expansions helped serve diverse populations across several neighborhoods.
2000s
Community partnerships
During the 2000s, The Gathering strengthened key partnerships with congregations, civic groups, restaurants, and food donors—laying the groundwork for deeper community impact. Food rescue emerged as a central strategy, reducing waste while significantly increasing meal capacity, while a growing volunteer base helped expand services and sustain this vital work.
2010s
REgional impact
During the 2010s, The Gathering emerged as one of Wisconsin’s largest volunteer-run meal programs, serving tens of thousands of meals each year. With a steadfast commitment to dignity and care, the organization built a strong reputation for delivering consistent, high-quality service to neighbors across the region.
2020
pandemic response
During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Gathering rapidly adapted its operations to meet unprecedented needs—expanding distribution models while continuing to serve meals safely and with dignity —never once shutting down! Through partnerships with organizations including the Benedict Center, Cathedral Center, Franciscan Peacemakers, Running Rebels Youth, and Sojourner Family Peace Center, The Gathering ensured meals reached neighbors when and where they were needed most.
Today
Strengthening impact
Currently, The Gathering serves more than 127,000 meals (2025) annually across multiple Milwaukee locations, continuing its commitment to hospitality, dignity, and meaningful community connection. With a focus on evaluation, sustainability, and strong partnerships, the organization is strengthening its impact to meet ongoing and evolving hunger needs throughout the community.
