Be There BEFORE: Hunger Action Month at The Gathering
Before the pantry is empty. Before a parent skips dinner so their children can eat. Before a neighbor has to ask for help.
There is a moment before hunger becomes a crisis—and this Hunger Action Month, The Gathering is asking our community to help us be there BEFORE.
Every September, Hunger Action Month brings attention to hunger in our communities and the ways each of us can take action. At The Gathering, that mission is something we live every day as we prepare and serve free, home-cooked meals to neighbors throughout Milwaukee.
The Need Is Growing
Hunger doesn't always look the way we expect.
It can be a working parent stretching groceries until the next paycheck. A family facing an unexpected expense that leaves less money for food. A neighbor skipping meals to make sure someone else in their household can eat.
Often, people make difficult choices long before they ever ask for help.
And right now, we're seeing the need continue to grow. In 2025, The Gathering served 126,610 meals, and in 2026, we are projecting an increase of more than 20%.
Behind every one of those meals is a person who deserves to be welcomed, cared for and treated with dignity.
More Than a Meal
Throughout the week, The Gathering's staff and volunteers prepare and serve meals at sites across Milwaukee and deliver meals to community partners serving neighbors who need additional support.
But what happens around the table is about more than food.
It's a warm welcome. A conversation. A place where everyone belongs. And, most importantly, the reassurance that when someone needs help, there is a community ready to show up.
That is what it means to be there BEFORE.
Take Action This September
Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for all of us to consider how we can be part of the solution.
Give. Your financial support helps The Gathering purchase food and supplies and continue preparing thousands of meals each month.
Volunteer. It takes many hands to prepare, serve and share meals with our community. Whether you volunteer once or return regularly, your time makes an impact.
Share. Tell a friend, family member, coworker or community group about The Gathering. Increasing awareness helps us reach more volunteers, supporters and neighbors who may need us.
Every action matters.
Because hunger doesn't begin when someone walks through our doors or asks for a meal. It begins long before.
This Hunger Action Month, help The Gathering continue to be there BEFORE.
Before the empty plate.
Before the skipped meal.
Before hunger becomes a crisis.
Together, we can make sure there is a meal—and a community—waiting.
Be there BEFORE. Support The Gathering this Hunger Action Month.
