Updates
Mount Carmel Luthern Church Meal Program Pilot Project
In September 2011, The Gathering began a pilot program with Mount Carmel Luthern Church at 8424 W. Center St. (North 84th & West Center Sts) to assess if a meal site was needed in that area. The Church has been providing all of the volunteers, cooks, supplies, and facilities, while The Gathering is providing the food and disposable supplies. The Church is hosting a lunch meal from 11:30 pm - 12:30 pm every 4th Saturday for 6 months (Sept. 24, Oct. 22, Nov. 26, Dec 31*, Jan. 28, Feb. 25). Please call Dani Ovanin at Mount Carmel for more information: 414-771-1270 ext. 17 or email dovanin@mountcarmelchurch.org
* December date changed due to Christmas. A Christmas meal will be served on December 31.
Hunger Book Sale
This year, the 30th annual Hunger Book Sale was held
Friday August 4th through Tuesday August 9th, 2011 and
donated $4,750 to The Gathering through its efforts. Thank you! In its 30 years of existence, the Hunger Book Sale has donated nearly $80,000 to The Gathering's ministry.

Milwaukee Empty Bowls
On Saturday, October 8, 2011 Milwaukee Empty Bowls raised funds through the sale of handmade donated bowls from the community and donated $6,500 of those sales to The Gathering. Thank you!
Fresh Produce Preservation Project (FPPP)
The FPPP has concluded its processing season for 2011. We exceeded our goal of doubling our produce this year. We either used produce fresh or preserved 3,496 pounds of fresh produce, which has been and will continue to be used in the meals we serve throughout the year. We had 58 volunteers participate in the processing this year. Thank you from The Gathering and our guests!
This project helps The Gathering to be good stewards of fresh food, which is generously donated and to meet our goal of expanding access to nutritious meals for our guests. Produce preservation decreases cost by reducing the amount of fresh produce purchased and increases nutrition.
We are always looking for more farmers or organizations interested in donating
fresh produce to this project and volunteers to assist in processing the produce up to twice a week from August through November. Experience in processing is not necessary, as on-the-job training will be provided. Volunteer assistance may be available to farmers that would like gleaning assistance. Please contact Laura Luttrell for more information, to discuss arrangements, or to be added to the FPPP email list at 414-272-4122 or lauraluttrell@thegatheringwis.org

Volunteer Recognition Event 2011
On Friday May 6, 2011, over 120 of The Gathering's volunteers, staff and board met at Mercy Hill Gallery inside Bay View's Hide House to celebrate the impact that volunteers had made over the previous year. Attendees enjoyed refreshments while socilizing, checking out the photography show hanging in the gallery space, and listening to the jazz duo of Steve Wolff and Todd Domenget. An interactive art project titled The Gathering Community Is... encouraged attendees to share their experiences as Gathering volunteers in images and words. When completed, this project will hang at The Gathering's meal sites on a rotating basis. Make sure to look for it in the coming months! The event culminated in the Awards Ceremony, honoring individuals and volunteer groups for their service milestones. A list of awardees and photos follows. The Marvelous Unspeaking Troupe of Entertaining Scoundrels (M.U.T.E.S.) capped the evening with their unique silent sketch comedy act. A big Thank You to all volunteers, staff and board members who helped make this year's event a success, and many thanks to all The Gathering's volunteers who continue to serve our guests with respect and dignity year-round.
