In addition to cooking and serving meals, The Gathering strives to respond to other needs of our guests as funding, staffing and opportunities allow.
- Mental Health Program: In September of 2000 The Gathering collaborated with the Homeless Outreach Nursing Center (HONC) of the American Red Cross to fund mental health services to our Breakfast Program guests. 70-80% of our guests are homeless, many with mental health issues. The HONC nurse patiently establishes trusting relationships with the intent of assessing, stabilizing and moving the homeless mentally ill into stable supported housing. This collaboration received the 2004 Milwaukee Nonprofit Strategic Alliance Award.
- Legal Assistance: The Legal Aid Society provides legal assistance for those persons who have no other options. Staff is on site at both the Breakfast & Dinner Programs twice a month.
- Medical Assistance: St. Ben's Medical Clinic provides blood pressure checks, referrals and advocacy to Gathering breakfast guests once each week.
- Supply Distributions: Sundries from the Avenue, sponsored by our host site St. James' Episcopal Church, coordinates distributions of toiletries and other "street" supplies several times each year. Distributions of socks and winter outerwear occur when there is enough for all.
- The Gathering also provides food to Our Next Generation - a tutoring and mentoring program located at St. Andrew's Episcopal Outreach Center, 35th & Lisbon Ave.
