More Than Food

The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin

In addition to cooking and serving meals, the Gathering seeks to respond to other needs of our guests when possible, including mental health support, legal aid, medical assistance and supply distributions.  Our preference is to deliver such services through collaborative programming with other Milwaukee organizations.

These collaborations are described below.  For the current schedule visit our Meal and Services Calendar.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANCE

Provided for Gathering guests during the breakfast meal at The Gathering on State Street (924 W. State Street). The Gathering collaborates with the Homeless Outreach Nursing Center (HONC) to provide mental health services to our breakfast guests, 60-70% of whom are homeless, many with mental health and/or addiction issues. The focus of the mental health staff is to locate, stabilize and house the homeless mentally ill.

LEGAL ASSISTANCE

Provided for Gathering guests during the breakfast meal at The Gathering on State Street (924 W. State St.) and during the dinner meal at Christian Faith Fellowship Church East (727 S Layton).   Attorneys from the Legal Aid Society along with volunteer attorneys provide assistance with municipal and civil issues which if left unaddressed can provide barriers to stable housing and job placement.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

Provided during the breakfast meal at The Gathering on State Street (924 W. State St.). St. Ben’s Medical Clinic provides blood pressure checks, information and referral services and seasonal flu shots.

SUPPLY DISTRIBUTIONS

Sundries from the Avenue, sponsored by St. James Episcopal Church, coordinates the distribution of toiletries and other supplies such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, lotion, hand warmers, detergent and more. Additional supply distributions take place at our other locations and at weekday meals when a sufficient number of items are available.

Red Door Clothing, co-sponsored by St. James Episcopal and Trinity Episcopal, distributes clothing, socks and outerwear to anyone in need. Clothing is distributed the first and third Saturday of each month at St. James from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The Gathering always welcomes in-kind donations to help provide for our homeless guests. Items like toiletries and apparel can make all the difference.
